FAQ

Can you fight Xanthe early?
Yes — at Svartrau Cathedral at night, at around level 10 per the community route, instead of clearing her camps first. One caveat from player reports: killing her early can leave you unable to properly access the Howling Keep afterward, which locks out the Phial of Xanthe's Blood found there.
What does killing Xanthe give you?
Drinking her blood — via the Phial of Xanthe's Blood in the Howling Keep — unlocks Blood Surge in the Vampirism skill tree, per PowerPyx. IGN adds that if you invite her into your mind afterward, she assists with special attacks during the final boss.
What happens if you spare Xanthe?
Per IGN, her Blood Guard withdraws from Griefberg Castle, thinning the final assault to Ambrus and Bakir's soldiers plus Brencis's personal guards. She offers advice before the final boss, and sparing her is the only way to skip the trap sequence during the finale.

Xanthe is the oldest vampire in the Vale Sangora — the Fextralife wiki records her as Xanthe, the Dark Mistress, a mage vampire who fights with blood spells and claws. IGN calls her “The Boyaress”: like Ambrus and Bakir, she is one of Brencis’s three vassals, and all three deaths feed the maximum infamy that the deal ending requires.

She is also the one court boss whose choice genuinely reshapes the endgame — kill or spare changes who defends Griefberg Castle and whether you face her trap sequence at all.

How Do You Unlock the Xanthe Fight?

Max out her anger. “The Cycle of Love” appears in your journal once Xanthe’s Court-tab rage peaks — GameSpot confirms the fight itself takes place in the Howling Keep, Xanthe’s own manor, and Game8 notes the quest hands you a lantern that grants entrance. PowerPyx’s step list is short: wait for an opportunity, get to the mansion, give the lantern to the statue, find Xanthe. The keep holds lantern puzzles and secrets on the way to her.

How Do You Beat Xanthe?

The Fextralife wiki documents her fight in detail — the version staged at the altar, which is also where the early route catches her (more on that below). Phase one is not even about her: Knight Bannerets spawn and must die first, and they only use basic sword attacks. Then she comes apart into a blood-mage kit:

AttackTellAnswer
Blood BurstGround glyph, delayed detonationDodge — glyphs are unblockable
Blood BarrageGlyph forms around her, then blowsMove away
Blood RushShe waves her hand in a circleKeep moving — multiple glyphs
Overhead LashBlood whip strikes from aboveParry, block, or dodge sideways at range
Sweeping Lash ComboWhip lashed from behind her neckBlock or parry both lashes — it hits even at close range
Orbs of BloodShe floats mid-cathedral, siphoning orbsDestroy the orbs — it stops her healing and staggers her
Xanthe’s ApparitionsThe voice line “From my blood, arise!”Illusions burst when attacked

She teleports constantly and hovers out of reach between casts, so save your gap-closers for the moments after her whip combos — the only attacks in the kit you can punish on block.

The Blood of Dawnwalker — Xanthe Boss Fight & All Choices

Can You Kill Xanthe Early at Svartrau Cathedral?

Yes, and the community route is popular: at night, confront her at Svartrau Cathedral’s altar — around level 10 per the guide videos — instead of clearing her camps the long way. She is passive until you interrupt her ritual for the Blood Guards, which is exactly what the early route exploits.

Should You Kill or Spare Xanthe?

This is the most consequential court-boss choice in the game, per IGN’s breakdown:

Kill her and she cannot defend Brencis in the final battle. Drink her blood — the phial from the Howling Keep — and you unlock Blood Surge in the Vampirism skill tree. The drain also sends you to a strange vampire afterlife where you choose her fate: invite her into your mind and she assists you with special attacks during the final boss, or leave her stranded there.

Spare her and her Blood Guard withdraws from Griefberg Castle entirely — the final assault thins to Ambrus and Bakir’s soldiers plus Brencis’s personal guards. She offers advice against Brencis before the fight. And critically, per IGN: “Sparing Xanthe is the only way to skip the trap” — an entire puzzle sequence during the finale that every other route has to eat.

The generic verdict: kill for the build (Blood Surge is the reward), spare for an easier finale.

How Does Xanthe Change the Griefberg Assault?

As the endings guide documents from the launch-week coverage: if Xanthe is still alive when you storm Griefberg Castle, she waits in the throne room as a boss. If you already killed her, you face her trap sequence instead. Either way the throne-room dialogue you pick there is what locks your ending — the 30-day clock only decides whether you get there in time.
