FAQ

What level should I be for Ambrus?
Game8 recommends taking the duel between levels 5 and 18. Rock Paper Shotgun's only build advice is to level Death from Above in the Vampiric skill tree, which deals bonus damage to bosses — and the poison route through The Bittersweet Toast weakens his defenses regardless of level.
What does Ambrus drop?
Per the Fextralife wiki: Denarius, a Golden Mug, Song of Valour (a level 21 Epic Shortsword), and Ambrus's Cuirass, a Legendary heavy chestpiece with 329 Armour and cooldown, stamina, and charge-restoration perks.
Should I kill or drain Ambrus?
Draining is the richer option mechanically: it unlocks the Scarlet Shield passive — a chance to restore health after every perfect block in vampire form, per TheGamer — and sends you to Anachora to choose whether to let him into your mind. Rock Paper Shotgun warns that draining a poisoned Ambrus leaves you poisoned for up to nine time tokens back in the Vale — burn them at a shrine.

Ambrus is one of Brencis’s three Boyars — alongside Bakir and Xanthe — and killing all three is what pushes your infamy to maximum, the requirement for the deal ending. The Court tab calls him a “vrakhir”; the Fextralife wiki records his full title as Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz. He waits in the Maragir Wealds, and his fight is a duel you have to bait him into.

How Do You Unlock the Ambrus Fight?

Anger him first. Complete Ambrus’s quests in the Court tab until his rage maxes out — Rock Paper Shotgun quotes the game’s own prompt: “When Anger Level reaches maximum, you will unlock a sidequest tied to this vrakhir.” Game8 breaks the route down: his court quests come in four flavors (Leech Collector camps, blood transports, prisoner transports, and blood cellars), the simplest being the Leech Collector camps — “head to the areas marked on the map and kill the guards,” then “locate and destroy the barrels of leeches.” Every court quest costs three time segments, and per Game8 about nine of them are enough to max his anger.

At max anger, The Gilded Gauntlet activates — per Game8 you head to the Maragir Crossroads shrine and read the letter on a displayed corpse to receive the duel invitation. Rock Paper Shotgun’s version continues in Maragir proper: a crowd has gathered, and Ambrus’s servant Erdene summons you to a duel at a location of Ambrus’s choosing. Game8 lists his fiefdoms as Laslea Glen, Briar Sloughs, Maragir Wealds, and St. Tyna’s Grove, with the fight recommended between levels 5 and 18.

What Is the Poison Route (The Bittersweet Toast)?

Erdene points you to Iulian Codrin, Ambrus’s vassal. Iulian calls the duel on Ambrus’s terms “an impossible battle” and offers to poison his own blood for Ambrus to drink. That offer starts The Bittersweet Toast:

  1. Meet the poisoner Vera — you find her already dead in an ancient circle.
  2. Use Focus Mode nearby to recover her ritual instructions; the brew is still available. The step requires daytime, so wait if you must.
  3. Light the pillars with Astral Communion, fight the Fallen Witch and her undead, then force Iulian to swallow the brew.
  4. Get to the duel promptly — arrive late and the poison leaves Iulian’s blood.

If you skip Iulian entirely and attend the duel at night, a woman named Raluca is offered in his place — unpoisoned, so Ambrus fights at full strength.

How Do You Beat Ambrus in the Duel?

A poisoned Ambrus “grows notably ill” and his defenses weaken — that is the entire point of the quest chain. The fight itself is a high-mobility blade duel; the Fextralife wiki names his full moveset:

AttackTellAnswer
Blade FuryRapid sword spin with afterimagesThe spin is unblockable — dodge sideways; the ending stab can be blocked or parried
Rising SlashDisappears, dashes in, slashes upwardDodge left
Downward SlashLong overhead wind-upParry, block, or dodge
BackswingHolds sword to his right, slow wind-upBlock or parry on timing
Leaping SlashDashes while leapingDodge away — the slash has short reach after he lands
Blood ProjectionsClones that attack one at a timeNo openings to counter — dodge only

He is evasive: attack him mid-animation and he disappears or backdashes to reposition, though he can sometimes be staggered during wind-ups. Rock Paper Shotgun’s one build tip: bring Death from Above from the Vampiric tree, which deals more damage to bosses. TheGamer’s combat notes fill in the punish windows: a poisoned Ambrus opens doubled over — free hits — and every time he bends over retching, rush in, because his patterns do not change. His claw swings from the right and sword swings from the left are parryable and are your main openings. The two things you cannot block: the fan-blade sword spin (back away) and the teleport that drops him in front of you (dodge backwards).

What Do You Get for Beating Ambrus?

Per Fextralife’s drop list: Denarius, a Golden Mug, Song of Valour (a level 21 Epic Shortsword with damage-against-mortals and activation-charge perks), and Ambrus’s Cuirass — a Legendary heavy chestpiece at 329 Armour with vampiric-cooldown, attack-stamina, and perfect-block perks.

His Court tab darkens, but his quests stay active and still grant infamy — you need all three Boyars dead for the deal route, so keep going. And if you are routing endings: the note that starts Lacra’s questline is found on Ambrus’s body after this fight.

Should You Kill or Drain Ambrus?

Draining is the mechanically richer choice, and not only for the story. TheGamer’s verdict: draining raises your Corruption and unlocks Scarlet Shield — a passive that can restore health after every perfect block in vampire form, “one of the game’s best” — while killing him grants no ability at all. The drain also triggers a cutscene to Anachora, where Ambrus begs to be invited in: accepting has no gameplay effect beyond his occasional commentary for the rest of the run (Rock Paper Shotgun’s “may or may not be advantageous”), refusing removes him permanently. Either way, loot his body before leaving.

One warning from Rock Paper Shotgun: if you drained the poisoned Ambrus, you return to the Vale Sangora poisoned yourself, with your health depleting constantly for up to nine time tokens. Spend them leveling skills at a shrine and the problem solves itself. Fighting him unpoisoned avoids this entirely — at the cost of a much harder duel.
