Joining the rebellion is a credit check. Where Loyalty Lies is the first big step in aligning with a faction, and the Manumits want proof you are worth harboring: Notorious, the fourth level on the court’s infamy track. This guide follows PC Gamer’s breakdown of the three documented ways to get there, which mix fits which run, and what waits at the end in Svartrau.
What Does Where Loyalty Lies Actually Ask?
Level IV on the infamy track. Open the Court tab in the menu — the infamy track and each boyar’s anger meter (hover their portrait) live there. Notorious is the fourth level, and until the meter says so, the Manumit chain stays closed past its opening quests. The track is also the trophies guide’s danger zone in reverse: the economy warnings live up at Infamy 9, far above this quest’s ask — membership is safely mid-track.
What Are the Three Ways to Earn Infamy?
Sabotage, duels, and camps. Per the walkthrough:
| Route | Infamy | Side effects |
|---|---|---|
| Named Vrakhir quests (Ambrus’s Cellars, Transports, Collectors, Prisoners — and every other boyar’s equivalents) | Steady | Raises the owning boyar’s anger; pays XP and skill points per our quest list |
| Defeat a boyar (anger them into their duel quest first — The Gilded Gauntlet for Ambrus) | One big chunk | Ends that boyar’s chapter; drain for their Vrakhir ability or kill for loot plus extra infamy |
| Soldier Camps and Soldier Pickets | Fast, cheap | Only one hourglass each; generally reward a Swordmastery manual; less anger per camp |
The picket detail matters for pacing: Military Checkpoints start appearing at infamy level 2, and they are as time-efficient as camps — the walkthrough calls camp-crushing “very time-effective” and the pickets “equally time-efficient” — both because of the one-cycle cost.
Which Mix Should You Run?
Camps for the floor, a duel for the ceiling. PC Gamer’s recommendation is a mixture: destroy Soldier Camps in Ambrus’s regions (unlocking Swordmastery abilities as you go — the same fixed chests on the skill manuals page), then dismantle enough of Ambrus’s operations to anger him into The Gilded Gauntlet and collect the duel’s big infamy payout. The alternative is switching regions entirely and angering a different boyar — viable, but the enemies there are a bit harder.
What Comes After Notorious?
Svartrau, and Sara. Reach Notorious, head to Svartrau, and meet Sara to continue the Manumit questline — the line that leads through Shadows in the Woods to Crake, his romance, and the Rise at Dawn assault route in the endings guide. The 30-day clock watches all of it: camps at one segment each are cheap, but the duel circuits and the anger farming are real line items on the same calendar as everything else in the valley.
