Builds in The Blood of Dawnwalker are really a map question. The skill trees decide what Coen can become, but the ability manuals that unlock the good parts sit at fixed places in the valley — camps, circles, and vendors you can route past on the 30-day clock. This page collects every documented location, from PC Gamer’s Swordmastery and Witchcraft manual guides and the Vrakhir blood breakdown, plus the perk rules GamesRadar mapped, so a build plan can double as a travel plan.
How Do Abilities and Perks Unlock?
Trees, points, manuals, and time. Per GamesRadar’s perk overview, perks split across three trees — Witchcraft, Swordmastery, and Vampirism — bought with perk points from leveling up, at road shrines. Three rules shape every build:
- Training costs time. Most perks take one to three time segments to learn — a genuine calendar expense, and the reason a build plan belongs next to the quest list.
- Manuals gate the good seats. Some perks and their upgrades require Manuals found in the world — sold by merchants, given as rewards, or spawning randomly in bookshelves.
- Corruption and bosses gate the night side. Some Vampirism powers are Corruption-gated (Corruption rises every time you drink blood), and other powers sit behind quests or boss fights — not every player even gets the chance to buy every perk, GamesRadar notes.
Each tree also hides three ultimate perks with a one-per-tree, locked-for-the-run choice. GamesRadar’s picks: Runic Bulwark for Witchcraft (a 15% chance to Hex on Perfect Block), Last Stand for Swordmastery (double weapon damage at 30% health or less), and Renounce Death for Vampirism (once per combat, return for ten seconds instead of dying). The first two need 35 perk points in their tree; the Vampirism one needs Corruption 15.
What Does Vrakhir Blood Give You?
A boss’s power, no skill points. Defeat a boyar and drink from him, per PC Gamer, and the ability is simply yours:
| Boyar | Ability granted |
|---|---|
| Ambrus | Scarlet Shield — heals on Perfect Block |
| Bakir | Shadowstorm |
| Xanthe | Blood Surge |
Vials of Vrakhir blood drop from Murohn in their dens at night and from quests — Xanthe’s Recruiters in Tantari Woods and The Silts, or Lost Blood in St. Tyna’s Grove — and work like manuals for leveling those abilities. Two more night powers ride Lacra’s questline: Piercing Shriek completes with Our Rotten Roots, and Mesmerize comes from eating the mandrake at the end of The Night of Horrors.
Where Are the Swordmastery Manuals?
Seven abilities, three trainers, fixed chests. Swordmastery covers human-form weapon combat; you start with Dirty Trick, per PC Gamer, and the other six live in fixed spots — Bandit Camps, Soldier Camps, quest rewards, or the trainers below:
| Trainer | How to unlock |
|---|---|
| Ursul | Free him in Ambrus’s Prisoners: Lucky Crossing, north of Svartrau; he invites you to his camp and sells manuals |
| Ocha | Unlocked through certain endings of The Heart Wants What It Wants, at the Altenmarkt tavern in Svartrau |
| Drogos | Follow the Manumit line — The Firebrand, Shadows in the Woods, Where Loyalty Lies — through What Moves the Dead |
| Ability (effect) | Where the manuals are |
|---|---|
| Charge (dash, damage, and stun) | Like Father, Like Son quest reward in the prologue (no need to win the fight); Soldier Camp east of Parlita, Boar’s Back; Ocha; Drogos |
| Broad Swing (two-arc AoE sweep) | Bandit Camp up the hill east of Laslea, near Outlaw’s Gorge shrine; Soldier Camp south of Maragir by the Lower Maragir Wealds shrine; Ocha; Drogos (×2) |
| Swiftness (attack speed after Perfect Block) | Bandit Camp northwest of Stoneward Post in Briar Sloughs; the Svetlana fight room in The Silts tower; Ocha; Drogos |
| Adrenaline Rush (damage after active abilities) | Bandit Camp in far south Maragir Wealds, southeast of Eerie Knoll shrine past a blood cellar; Ocha; Drogos |
| Artery Strike (critical, can decapitate) | Soldier Camp on the road toward the convent in St. Tyna’s Grove, north of the big Ambrus fort; help and spar with Volk in Buried Past; Ocha; Drogos |
| Walking Fortress (Perfect Block restores Activation Charge) | Soldier Camp south of Stuga Marshes shrine, St. Tyna’s Grove; Ursul’s camp; Ocha; Drogos |
| Dirty Trick (starter ability — extra manual) | Bandit Camp in the northeast of St. Tyna’s Grove; Ocha; Drogos |
PC Gamer’s routing note: all of these can be gathered in the regions just past Laslea, especially St. Tyna’s Grove — conveniently the same destination as Anca’s Echoes of Silenced Bells. Regular (non-ability) skill manuals are random, so don’t hunt those; the ability manuals above are the fixed ones.
Where Are the Witchcraft Manuals?
Ten hexes, four free, six to find, six vendors. Witchcraft is daytime spellcraft. Anca hands you Compel Soul, Astral Communion, Burning Blood, and Mercurial Fervour near the prologue’s end; the other six abilities need manuals from Ancient Circles, Haunted Sites, Pilgrimage of Power quests, bookcases, or these vendors:
| Vendor | Where to find them |
|---|---|
| Anca | Crossroads Inn, St. Tyna’s Grove, after Echoes of Silenced Bells |
| Vera | East side of the Briar Sloughs swamp, southeast of Mert’s Mill |
| Peddler of Wonders | The Midden, the ruined district west of Svartrau |
| Mevasser | Unmarked: Neustadt’s tree square, house on the left by the stone archway |
| Uriash Matriarch | Through Lacra’s Song of the Mountain quest |
| Sanzhana merchant | Gone Home, then Letters to Lunka through Pearly and Precious |
| Ability (effect) | Where the manuals are |
|---|---|
| Ravenous Flock (crow AoE and stun) | Pilgrimage of Power: Bear Trouble, west of Laslea Gate shrine; Pilgrimage of Power: Fanatics, northeast St. Tyna’s Grove |
| Cycle of Ruin (attacks extend ability durations) | Ancient Circle at the Cursed Chasm’s west end (grab the legendary sword down there); Svetlana drop, The Silts tower; Xanthe’s mansion two-lantern room in The Cycle of Love; Mevasser, Sanzhana, Uriash Matriarch |
| Soul Reaping (lifesteal over time) | Ancient Circle east of Maragir; Haunted: River Massacre northeast of Griefberg Castle; vault chest in the Svetlana room; Vera, Mevasser, Uriash Matriarch |
| Burning Blood (damage over time) | Already unlocked — extra manuals: Ancient Circle southwest of Eerie Knoll; Boar’s Back Tower top; the Curious House opposite the cathedral in Svartrau (balcony, night); Anca, Mevasser, Uriash Matriarch |
| Unholy Vitality (health regen after abilities) | Haunted: Site of Crucifixion south of St. Clements’ Monastery; Echoes of Silenced Bells final boss; Uriash Matriarch, Sanzhana |
| Soul Stigma (crit chance and damage) | Ancient Circle northeast of St. Tyna’s Grove; chest at the end of Stronger Than Achilles; Vera, Anca, Uriash Matriarch |
| Mercurial Fervour (haste, slows the world) | Already unlocked — extra manuals: St. Tyna’s Convent library top floor during Echoes of Silenced Bells; Sanzhana, Uriash Matriarch |
| Life Lock (block and reflect damage) | Automatically unlocked in Who Pulls the Strings (Manumit line, Aurelius’s tower); two more from Mevasser |
Which Perks Should a Build Take?
GamesRadar’s shortlists, as recommendations — not gospel. Their tree-by-tree picks: Witchcraft favors Mercurial Fervour for exploration, Frugal Witchcraft to offset the health cost of spells, Forbidden Sigils for more ability slots, Amalgam for stacking buffs, and Life Lock for reflection. Swordmastery — the tree that works day and night — leans on Sustained Focus (more Activation Charges), Perfect Block and Sharp Eye for the parry game, Master Fencer and Endless Effort for fundamentals, plus Second Skin II, which is the armor proficiency perk in disguise. Vampirism wants Shapeshift for night travel, Death From Above and Voracious Bite for killing, Endless Hunger for safety against accidental hunger kills — the same mechanic that can kill a romance — and Hastened Corruption early, which GamesRadar calls an XP multiplier in effect.
