The Blood of Dawnwalker Choices Guide: Every Major Decision Explained

FAQ

Should you spare or kill Xanthe in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
Killing her is the mechanically better deal, per PC Gamer: drinking her blood grants the Blood Surge ability, and you avoid fighting her at the castle either way — sparing only adds her advice there. Sparing her removes the Blood Guard from the assault and skips her posthumous trap, but she keeps killing women to keep Chariklea alive.
Does inviting Ambrus in matter?
Mechanically, almost not at all — PC Gamer's verdict is 'Basically, no.' The invite only happens if you drank his blood, and Scarlet Shield is yours either way. What changes is flavor: invited, Ambrus comments in your head for the rest of the game and helps slightly in the final boss, where he can also be turned against you.
What happens if Anca uses the Font of Life?
It is the best outcome for Anca, per PC Gamer: the Font cleanses her curse and scrubs the sigils from her arm, adds dialogue to the following romance scene, and leads to her best eventual fate. Coen using it trades that for the Font of Life health-regeneration passive; destroying it nets only the Ancient Greaves from under the altar.
Should you kill the soldiers at Mert's Mill in The Firebrand?
If you arrive by day, yes — PC Gamer is emphatic. Renna asks you to spare the soldiers hiding in the barn, but if you leave them alive she is killed while you rescue Mert; kill them and the couple escapes to the Svartrau Almshouse. Arriving at night inverts the choice: killing the ambushers brands Renna a collaborator, so talk your way out as Mirto instead.
Can you save Vlad in the prologue?
Yes, and it is a health check, not a dialogue check. When Vlad leaves the burning house, keep Coen above one health segment — at one or below, hunger takes over and kills him. Farm Vial of Human Blood from the soldiers before the Banneret miniboss so the fight cannot drop you under the line.
Which choices affect the ending in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
The ending forks are the assault route and the Brencis deal, covered in our endings guide; the choices on this page mostly move character fates, castle resistance, and rewards instead. Romance lines carry their own lockouts, mapped in the romance overview.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is built out of choices with teeth: Coen’s decisions decide who survives to the epilogue, how hard the Griefberg assault fights back, and which abilities the valley hands you. This tracker collects every major choice with documented outcomes — six decisions deep enough to plan a run around, each sourced from PC Gamer’s choice guides or our own walkthroughs, with the small print kept honest.

Which Choices Actually Matter?

The ones that move fates, fights, or rewards. The table is the short version; the sections after it carry the consequences in full.

Spare or kill XantheThe Cycle of LoveCastle assault resistance; Blood Surge; Chariklea’s fate
Invite Ambrus in or notThe Gilded GauntletFlavor commentary; a slight final-boss swing

Vlad at the burning housePrologueVlad’s life; rebel-network intel

Spare or Kill Xanthe?

Kill for power, spare for an easier castle — mostly. Xanthe is the choice with the most moving parts. Per PC Gamer: spare her during The Cycle of Love, and the final assault loses its Blood Guard enemies, skips the trap sequence, and gains her advice in the castle. Kill her, and you don’t fight her there either — but you run the nightmare labyrinth her spite leaves behind, solved by following the triangular, tentacled-eye banners door to door (our Xanthe boss guide covers the full fight).

The tiebreakers, straight from the same guide: killing and drinking her blood grants the Blood Surge ability — one of the Vrakhir powers on the skill manuals page — while sparing her means she “intends to keep killing women to keep her daughter Chariklea alive.” Kill, and a follow-up choice lands on Chariklea herself: leave her alone in the mansion or grant the more humane mercy.

Invite Ambrus In?

A flavor decision that refuses to be a mistake. The question only exists after you drink Ambrus’s blood in The Gilded Gauntlet. Invite him in and he talks — a voice commenting on your choices and combat for the rest of the game, which PC Gamer’s author found worth the price of admission alone. Consequences beyond that: “Basically, no.” He helps a little in the final boss, can be turned against you in it, and touches neither abilities, Corruption, nor vampiric powers — Scarlet Shield, which heals on Perfect Block, arrives either way. The real question is whether Ambrus earns a shot at redemption or eternity in Anachora, vampire hell — a judgment the guide notes applies to every boyar you can kill.

Who Uses the Font of Life?

Anca’s curse, Coen’s passive, or a pair of legendary trousers. In Anca’s Stronger Than Achilles, the Font holds enough blood for one user, and three lines decide who:

  1. Coen drinks — the Font of Life passive regenerates human health during the day, a solid pick since Witchcraft spells cost health. Anca accepts it gracefully and speculates the world holds other cures; the romance proceeds, but the choice resurfaces in her eventual fate.
  2. Anca drinks — no reward, but the best outcome for her: the curse cleanses, the sigils on her arm scrub away, the following romance scene gains dialogue, and her story lands its best ending.
  3. Destroy it — the worst trade: the Ancient Greaves under the altar, a fairly average pair of legendary trousers against everything you gave up.

Kill the Soldiers at Mert’s Mill?

Arrival time flips the right answer. In The Firebrand, the mill confrontation plays out differently by clock:

  • By night, soldiers ambush you and demand your identity. Talk your way out — “I’m Mirto” — because killing them brands Renna a rebel collaborator while Mert rots in Stoneward Post.
  • By day, Renna plays cart-repair hostess and begs you to spare the soldiers hiding in the barn. PC Gamer’s verdict is blunt: “You should absolutely kill the soldiers in the barn.” Spare them and Renna’s corpse waits on the farm when you return from freeing Mert; kill them and the couple escapes to the Svartrau Almshouse, where you can check on Mert later inside the cathedral complex.

One hedge kept honest: the author has not tested what quest delay costs — freeing Mert promptly is the safe read.

Save Vlad at the Burning House?

Pack blood vials, keep one segment of health. The prologue’s last mercy is a hunger check. Above one health segment when Vlad exits the burning house, Coen resists and Vlad survives — handing over vital intel on the rebel network and a promise to meet again. At one segment or below, hunger wins and Vlad dies. The catch: a Vrakhiri Banneret miniboss and a soldier immediately precede the conversation, so farm Vial of Human Blood from the soldiers wandering the area first.

What About the Brencis Deal and the Assault Routes?

Bigger than a table row — but already mapped. The prologue’s deal with Brencis and the four assault routes on Griefberg decide which of the game’s endings you get; the endings guide walks every path. Two more choice families live on their own pages: the romance lockouts (order traps, the Griefberg timing, vampire-form hunger kills) and the missables guide for anything a single run can lose for good. New to the valley entirely? The beginner guide is the safer first click than a spoilers tracker.
